
Most often in design, typography is considered a necessity, but is typically overlooked as a design element. It is sometimes made as small as possible just to try to get it out of the way to allow for “real design”. Most people overlook how interesting and creative typography can get across the message/concept even further, as well as create beautiful design patterns and visual interest. I personally find myself drawn to designs with a lot of type because it allows me to not only focus on the words and message, but also forces me to see the beauty and creativity that went into the design. Well thought out typography can speak volumes and have such an emotional impact on the viewer, which is why I wanted to focus on that this week. Here is a collection of typographic posters that are innovative and beautifully designed.
So how does this apply to the digital space? Well, we all know that design for the web, and design for print are different. It is still design though and all of the elements that go into it, including type, should make an impact. In the digital space, designing with type isn’t always as pronounced and dramatic as in print, however even subtle ways of working with the type to support the concept matter. Here are some examples of how type is done well, and creatively for TV and online.
How Edison Are You?

On this site, there is a limited number of images, and the majority of the design is with type. On the homepage alone, you’ll notice that the type forms a circle which automatically creates visual interest because it’s creative and unexpected. My first thought when looking at this was that it reminded me of a sun, which makes me think of light, which makes me think of Edison. While I can’t be sure of the designers intention here, to me, this is a strong site where the type not only supports the concept, but creates an interesting visual design.
Girl Effect

The entire intro of this site is text based. There are some patterns and shapes used, and this is to provide some visual interest. The designer here could have simply used some static images and had a person reading the script behind it, but they chose to use type as a means to communicate this message. While simple, it does make an impact. Once you get into the site, you’ll notice how easy it is to navigate to the information due to the limited calls to action, and the size of the type.
John Likens

This designer uses a lot of large type in all of his designs. Not only does it look beautiful, but again supports the concept and makes an impact. Watch the demo reel and you can see how much type becomes part of his designs. For me, while all of it looks great, the two instances that really stood out were when we see the organic type treatment of the word passion, and in the ending sequence when his tagline transitions out into birds. It’s a beautifully done transition, and has an emotional impact on the user. Just another way that type, combined with design elements can be extremely interesting.
G-Munk Finn Movie

G-Munk is a famous video/flash designer that I’ve followed for a while. I saw him speak at a Flash Conference a few years back, and was lucky enough to see some of the projects he was working on, as well as how he went about creating them. This is one of his older movies. If you go through slowly, you’ll notice that every frame of the movie is designed. There is so much detail that goes into his work, and he always uses type for visual interest. There is interesting angles, depth, size patterns and colors within his type that make it visually appealing, and even though most of it can’t really be read, it actually enhances the design.
